For active vibration control in linear systems, structural response of the controlled structure is the superposition of the response caused by external disturbances, which is defined as the primary response, and the response caused by the active vibration controller, which is defined as the control response. This structural vibration can be cancelled if the control response has equal amplitude and opposite phase as the primary response. The primary response typically cannot be directly measured during the process of active control where both the disturbance and active controller have actions on the structure. This paper presents a Primary Response Reconstruction Algorithm (PRRA) based vibration control scheme. At selected frequencies, PRRA reconstructs the primary harmonic response on-line and the active vibration controller based on PRRA produces a control output dynamically to suppress the structural vibration. Digital phase controller, amplitude controller, and control algorithm to generate the harmonic control outputs are also developed to implement the vibration control scheme. Vibration control experiments using piezoelectric sensors and actuators are performed on a cantilever beam subject to persistent harmonic excitation of either single-frequency or multi-frequency harmonic inputs. The experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed PRRA methodology.
